NSS 2017: The importance of getting your student voice heard

The Autumn semester is now drawing to a close, and graduation is moving closer and closer! As you start taking your final classes, there's a few more things to do before you move on to your new careers.

Students talking during uni classOne of the most important things you can do as a student is give feedback to your institution, so we can improve the student experience for both current and future generations of students. Feedback opportunities give the wider student community a prominent voice that empowers you to make change happen. Loved your course, but don't think there's enough resources? Don't like how a course is organised? Think the academic support is phenomenal? It's important to use your voice and speak up.

National Student Survey

One way to do this is by taking part in the National Student Survey (NSS). The survey gives final-year students a chance to honestly tell the public and their university what they liked, what they didn't and what needs work. The answers remain anonymous and the feedback you provide will be used by future students to decide where to study.

When you fill out the NSS, you get a chance to have your ideas and opinions heard by the public and by us. Our students will help inform and shape the learning and teaching strategy, as well as the student experience for many years to come. You also get the chance to win a £150 voucher.

Classroom feedback

In week four of each semester, you're encouraged to give feedback on the course and how you feel it's running at that stage. Student support staff visit lectures to talk with students, identify any areas of concern and provide responses in person in an informal environment. You can also directly contact the student support staff with any questions or concerns, who are located within the Lovat Lane campus.

At the end of each semester, you're once again given the chance to give feedback on the course and teaching support with module-level surveys. This information is feed back to the organisation and can have a big impact on the future learning and teaching strategy.

Feedback from students is an integral part of the educational process, and we encourage all students to be proactive and take advantage of the opportunity to have your voice heard - from filling out a survey, speaking to a member of staff, or talking to your academics.
