What makes a successful leader? Is there such a thing as a 'natural leader'?

Accomplished leaders in banking and finance are most often those who’ve learnt to apply a blend of talents and skills, who use recognised tools and processes, and who apply them with consistency.

Course instructor 

David Connolly

Working for more than thirty years within the UK’s leading asset finance house, Lombard (a subsidiary of the RBS Group), David has developed extensive expertise in business-to-business lending and relationship management. 

David began his career with Lloyds Banking group, before being appointed as a Senior Manager for the UK arm of US consumer finance business Beneficial Corporation.

Beginning in Relationship Management, David went on to develop his Corporate Credit skills as a Risk Underwriter, before transitioning to customer-facing Sales Manager and other leadership roles in UK Banking. David has senior leadership experience in Retail, Commercial, and Corporate Banking. His Asset Finance expertise affords specialist knowledge of on- and off-balance sheet funding structures, asset backed lending, tax and non-tax based leasing. Sector specialisms include manufacturing, technology, green energy, transportation, agriculture, marine and aviation. 

Most recently, as Director of Asset Finance, David led a team of accredited asset finance specialists in Birmingham (UK), providing funding growth and advisory support to businesses ranging from SMEs to FTSE 100 organisations. Using his commercial experience, David supports the Entrepreneurial Spark business accelerator hub, providing coaching, support and advice to aspiring entrepreneurs. 

David is an established mentor and career coach, having helped develop talent at both ends of the career spectrum. This includes cohort oversight for the Early Careers Graduate Scheme and acting as a mentor and leadership coach to experienced staff on the Aspiring Leaders programme.

David is professionally qualified in credit and lending, an accredited lean practitioner and a Chartered Banker. He brings practical skills in Commercial and Corporate Credit Risk, Client Relationship Management, Leadership and Management development.
