How to stand out in a crowded mortgage market

21 August, 2018Michael Nicholls

London-brick-houseMortgage advisers play a critical role helping  consumers navigate the fast moving maze of mortgage products to ensure they get a good deal. And, as we’re living longer and more of us want to use property as part of our retirement planning, because of this the mortgage market is getting more and more complicated. That presents challenges for advisers, but opportunities too. So, as a highly skilled adviser, how do you stand out from the crowd?

“The recent FCA call for it to be easier for consumers to compare advisers and products, shows how important it’s becoming for advisers to differentiate,” says Brian Wilkinson, Managing Director, Corporate and Professional Qualifications at The London Institute of Banking & Finance.

“And there are other factors at play. With the liberalisation of the market, and the increasing complex needs of consumers, advisers need to continually develop their professional skills, knowledge and practice to ensure they can give their clients the best possible advice.”

Stand out from the crowd

So how do you ensure you stay up to date with the latest developments and regulations? And if you really want to stand out from your peers, to demonstrate higher level expertise and professional skills, what more can you do once you’ve qualified as a mortgage adviser?

Luckily we are an awarding body for CeMAP – the Certificate in Mortgage Practice – which is viewed as the industry standard qualification for mortgage advisers. It has recently launched two different routes for mortgage advisers, to help them stay up to date with developments and new products as well as demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and expertise.

It also has a publicly searchable register where customers can check an adviser’s credentials, for example to confirm the qualifications and designations they hold.

Continuing professional development

To help mortgage advisers stay up to date, The London Institute of Banking & Finance recently launched its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme for mortgage advisers – CeMAP Professional. CeMAP Professional leads to a CeMAP Professional designation, with a status that advisers can display, helping them to differentiate their skills and services.

Higher level mortgage qualifications

For senior advisers who want to go the extra mile, we’ve also just launched our CeMAP Diploma.

The Diploma enables professionals to gain and demonstrate a higher level of skills and knowledge than mortgage advisers who only have a Level 3 qualification, such as CeMAP.

This Level 4 qualification helps advisers develop specialist knowledge and skills relevant to the mortgage industry, whilst demonstrating higher levels of professionalism.

Attaining CeMAP Diploma verifies to clients and employers that holders can provide a more advanced service, which is increasingly becoming a must in today’s market.

Want to do more

For advisers who want to give an even more holistic view of their clients’ needs as our society ages, there are other qualifications they could explore such as equity release and pension transfers. Full details are available at www.libf.ac.uk/study/professional-qualifications.

About CeMAP Professional

This continuing development programme involves 15 hours of CPD a year, which can include mortgage-related seminars and workshops, webinars, technical updates, e-learning and professional studies.

Resources and content are available on The Institute's website and/or content and activities from other sources can be included.

CeMAP Professional is a status that mortgage advisers can display to clients, employers and peers to confirm that they:

  • Actively pursue personal development to ensure their knowledge of the mortgage industry is current
  • Work in a professional and ethical manner
  • Are a holder of either CeMAP or the CeMAP Diploma
  • Once achieved, advisers can download a badge to use on their email signatures, cards and in client materials.

About the CeMAP Diploma

The CeMAP Diploma is a Level 4 qualification registered with Ofqual in the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).
