The next panel discussion, held in conjunction with the CSFI, will focus on capital markets. The changes in this space have been just as profound as in retail finance but perhaps less obvious to outsiders. In the equity markets they include consolidation of exchanges, growth of off-exchange trading (i.e. "dark pools"), algo-trading, the radical restructuring of post-trade clearing and settlement, as well as tighter regulations of rating agencies. In fixed income markets, we are still seeing increasingly complex financial products. But longer-term, it is legitimate to ask whether the markets themselves could be disintermediated by technology. After all, what is the London Stock Exchange (for instance) but a very complex algorithm in a very big box?
