This is the last in a series of discussions on sustainable finance, organised with the CSFI. It will pull together key themes and explore likely developments in 2020. The debate has ranged from measures to tackle climate change via carbon pricing to the duties placed on fund managers to influence companies for the better, and to explain to savers, notably in pension funds, what is going on.

Impending regulation, including implementing recommendations from the international Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), will add to the pressure on those who provide finance to scrutinise the 'greenness' of the companies or projects receiving the money. The E in ESG has tended to get the most attention this year, as measurement and disclosure of environmental impact has improved. But issues such as boardroom diversity, executive pay and the human rights of workers in supply chains are also part of the landscape.

Financial institutions from banks to insurers and asset managers are at the forefront of financing sustainable businesses and infrastructure, so we are delighted to welcome a distinguished panel with a variety of perspectives.

  • Sir Roger Gifford, Senior Banker at SEB in London. He started at SG Warburg and joined Enskilda Securities in the early 80's. He headed SEB's operations in Japan in the 90's, becoming UK country manager from 2000 - 2017. He is now Chair of the new UK Green Finance Institute, having led the Government's Green finance Taskforce in 2018.
  • Nick Robins, Professor in Practice at LSE's Grantham Institute, where he leads on sustainable finance. From 2014 to 2018, he was co-director of UNEP's inquiry into a sustainable finance system, and before that, he was head of the Climate Change Centre at HSBC. He is also co-chair of Inspire, a board member at Investor Watch and a co-founder of Carbon Tracker.
  • Paul Stuart-Smith, Chief Executive of Zero Carbon Finance Limited, which advises companies in the maritime, oil & gas and other industries on climate change strategy, specifically disclosures in line with the TCFD recommendations. He is a former chief operating officer at the Baltic Exchange and writes on issues relating to the environment and maritime industry.
  • Jennifer Thompson, Journalist, Financial Times. She wrote extensively on the asset management industry's handling of ESG issues for the Financial Times supplement FTfm and is now Assistant Companies Editor. A former retail banking correspondent, she has also worked as a business reporter in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
