Banks no longer taking risks: consequences for our economies around the world

< return to all events

Thomas Grandjean, Structured Finance Manager, Trafigura

This event is organised by The London Institute of Banking & Finance (Alumni Singapore).

Since the financial crisis banks have to varying degrees lowered their risk appetite, especially when lending to SME's which often represent the backbone of an economy.

Risk-taking and other human values or attitudes play an important, often underappreciated role in shaping economies. This shift in risk-taking has been felt differently across countries, most strongly in Japan and continental Europe, less so in China and the US.

The speaker will aim to provide a global overview of how we see those economies emerging in a post pandemic world.

Listen to speaker and author, Thomas Grandjean, talk about risk-taking on banking and its impact on wider economies, and share different perspectives on things described in his book. He will also give an overview of secular stagnation, the future role of banks as financial intermediaries amid an increasingly stringent regulatory framework, the emergence of alternative sources of financing and many more.
