MENA webinar

Transitioning to net zero in the Middle East and North Africa

< return to all events

Andrew Cunningham, Dr. Clarisse Simonek, Emmanuel Rondeau, and Dr. Perihan Abdelghaly - Visiting Faculty, The London Institute of Banking & Finance

The London Institute of Banking & Finance MENA will host a webinar regarding the net zero alignment of financial institutions post Paris Agreement in the GCC and MENA region.

With the shadow of COP27 and the emergence of COP28, the region's financial institutions and governing bodies have pursued their net zero goals, and the webinar will examine, identify, and highlight key strategical activity the MENA region has undertaken to ensure sustainable finance.

Climate risk experts Emmanueal Rondeau, Dr. Clarisse Simonek, Dr. Perihan Abdelghaly and Andrew Cunninghan will discuss climate pledges in the GCC region, who is in and who is not, leaders and laggards, and latest trends observed.

The webinar will be presented in a conference panel format and discuss the whitepaper released by LIBF MENA. There will also be an opportunity for a Q&A session to explore the way forward in delivering net zero in the GCC region.

Who will be speaking?
Andrew Cunningham, Dr. Clarisse Simonek, Emmanuel Rondeau, and Dr. Perihan Abdelghaly - Visiting Faculty, The London Institute of Banking & Finance

Andrew's work focuses on corporate governance and on bank risk and regulation. He has extensive experience working with banks and bank regulators in both advanced and developing economies. He has advised on the implementation of international standards, and delivered training courses on bank regulation, bank capital and liquidity, and corporate governance to central banks, supranational organisations and commercial banks around the world.

Clarisse specialises in responsible investment. With both executive and non-executive experience, she's worked for asset owners, fund managers, social enterprises and universities across Europe, Americas, and Middle East. She helps financial institutions navigate the complexity the sustainability presents to global finance. Bridging academia and practice, she seeks to deliver ambitious, yet pragmatic change.

Emmanuel is the Lead Director (NED) at La Banque Postale in France, where he chairs the Board Risk Committee and the Nomination Committee. La Banque Postale, 100% indirectly owned by the French State, is the first European bank and one of the first financial institutions worldwide to have its decarbonisation pathway recognised by the science based targets initiative (SBTi).

Perihan is a lecturer and programme leader in sustainable finance at The London Institute of Banking & Finance. An ESG, sustainable finance and anti-corruption expert, Perihan has over 17 years of experience in the private and public sectors in the MENA region. She has supported and consulted a few governments in the region in developing their national strategies such as Kuwait, Iraq and Lebanon.
